To save weight, the car was designed to drive on "run flat" tires. When the tire is punctured, it is designed to drive on for another 60 miles or so, a period during which you are supposed to go to the dealer to get the tire changed.
The problem arises with Coopers starting with the 2006 model, I believe. When the air gets cold, the pressure in the tires drops as the air contracts. The run flat tires have pressure gauges in the stem, which read this as the tire going flat. The flat tire warning light then comes on even though there is not a problem.
The first time this happened, I drove it into a Discount Tire store. They checked the tire and found nothing wrong. The second time this happened, I did the same thing. The third time this happened, I check the pressures in each tire, reset the warning light and went about my business!
If you have a newer Mini Cooper, you need to have a tire gauge handy. The warning light will come on frequently in winter, so you'll need a quick and ready way to know if you have a problem or false alarm. Driving to the tire store each time is not even remotely worth it!
